How To Prepare for Windows 7 End of Life

Windows 7 End of Life

You have most likely heard that Microsoft announced the end of life for their popular Windows 7 product. “End of life" means Microsoft will discontinue all support, including paid support; and all updates, including security updates effective January 14, 2020. This will leave all Windows 7 users more vulnerable to security risks and viruses.

Windows 7 is still being used by many business and home users. How these businesses and home users navigate the impending end of life deadline will rely largely on careful planning. Examining your current system set up and identifying what you will need to update will help you to create a plan for a smooth transition.

The Windows Product Life Cycle

All Windows products have a lifecycle, beginning with their release and ending with the end of support. In the past, these lifecycles lasted anywhere from five to ten years, depending on the product.  With the introduction of Windows 10, however, Microsoft adopted a new policy for the sustainability of their products. This model incorporates continuous updates and support for current product offerings.

This is good news for both business and home users.  From this point forward, Windows 10 will remain up to date with the latest fixes and updates. You won’t need to upgrade to a new operating system after Windows 10 is installed on your computer. Microsoft has even referred to Windows as the “Last Version of Windows!”

But…Will I Still Be Able to Use Windows 7?

The answer is yes, but your computer will become vulnerable to viruses, security risks and bugs with no support from Microsoft to correct the issues. We advise our customers to begin planning now on how they would like to transition to Windows 10 while Windows 7 is still being supported.

Windows 7: To Upgrade or To Replace?

Many Window 7 users are now wondering if they should upgrade their existing computer or if it is time to look at purchasing a new system. Renaissance Computing can help you determine the best option for your business or home computers. Some systems can be upgraded to Windows 10 and a new Solid State Hard Drive and work like new, other systems might be facing their own end life. We are here to help you make these important decisions.
